A Proactive Approach to Compliance With the Lead and Copper Rule

Bradford City Water Authority Lead and Copper Rule Compliance

Client: Bradford City Water Authority
Location: Bradford, Pa.

A computer dashboard shows a pale yellow map with red stars pinpointing service lines.

Machine learning decreased manual data entry through automation by reading and digitally processing individual files.

Challenge

To better protect communities against lead exposure, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently updated its Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). The updates require water utilities to monitor their drinking water distribution systems for lead, calling on them to identify their service line materials and create service line inventories by Oct. 16, 2024.

The Bradford City Water Authority (BCWA) serves more than 6,200 customers with more than 4 million gallons of drinking water each day. Though not required to complete its inventory until Oct. 2024, the authority is taking a more proactive approach.

Solution

GeoDecisions, a division of Gannett Fleming, assisted BCWA with its service line inventory, providing:

  • Machine learning solutions that saved time and money through automation.

  • LCR inspection, inventory, and regulatory reporting.

  • Data visualization through web maps, applications, and dashboards.

  • Esri® Lead Service Line Inventory solution implementation services.

  • Geographic information system (GIS)/geospatial data integration for additional data analysis.
