2023 Student GIS Conference Scholarship Winners Announced

We are excited to announce the scholarship winners for this year’s Brian Rudolph GIS Scholarship Program. These four students joined us at the 2023 Pennsylvania Geographic Information Systems (PAgis) conference in Camp Hill, Pa. This professional development opportunity exposed students to real-world GIS applications and opportunities.

Meet the Winners

 
 

Our winners bring different perspectives and experiences but a shared passion for geographic information systems (GIS)/geospatial technology. Another commonality among the four students is their focus on accomplishing great things in the GIS/geospatial industry.

Our winners represent the studies of geology, geospatial technology, and geography. We asked each of them why they chose their area of study. Read what makes each of them unique.

Dawson Sensenig

Dawson is enjoying the outdoors. He is smiling, wearing a baseball cap, and holding a rock.
“I chose geology as my major because I’ve always had a burning passion for studying Cretaceous and/or Pleistocene megafauna. So, geology was a step in the right direction. I hope that, in the future, I can help make GIS a more useful tool in the field of paleontology.”

Joe Ciavarella

“I chose geospatial technology as my major because I developed an interest in using applications like Google Earth to see what tools I could use to change the way the map functioned when I was in high school. Then, when I was on a college tour at the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, I discovered the GIS program, which involved using advanced computer applications to change and make maps.”

Meghan Englehart

“I chose geology as my major because I’ve always been passionate about learning about the earth and wanted a more hands-on approach to its fascinating history.”

Tom Hansen

“I chose geography as my major because geography has always interested me. I also felt it was the best degree to learn a broad variety of skills, as I would be studying both statistics and modeling. I selected an international year as part of my master’s degree because I wanted the benefit of achieving a master’s degree while also studying abroad.”
